Canada, Mr. Ellwood Bass Jr., went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on April 26th, 2014, reuniting with his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Mary Frances Canada. He was also preceded in death by his parents Ellwood Bass Canada Sr. and Elsie Hailey Canada. Ellwood was born in Charlotte County, VA on February 5th, 1932. He graduated from Randolph Henry High School in 1948 and attended Augusta Military Academy, graduating from Virginia Tech in 1953 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. Ellwood served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956 and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Albuquerque, New Mexico. He and his family lived many places, including 25 years in Chester, VA, where he retired from Honeywell. Ellwood continued to work as a chemical engineer in Charleston, WVA for many years when he and Mary Frances returned there, where they first met, to enjoy their final 22 years of life together. He was a member of Bible Center Church in Charleston. He most recently lived in Birmingham, AL with his son Kevin and family. Surviving are his brother, Roland Hailey Canada and his wife, Carolyn Odom Canada of Blacksburg, VA, his two sons, Steven Ellwood Canada Kathy of Midlothian, VA, and Kevin Hunt Canada Nancy of Birmingham, AL; five granddaughters, Carrie C. Rivas, Marianne C. Clarke, Jenni C. Rothchild, Stefi Canada and Sudie Canada, and two grandsons, Kevin Canada Jr. and John Canada. He is also survived by three great-granddaughters, Alana Rivas, Hazel Clarke and Rosalie Clarke; two great-grandsons, Wesley Rothchild and Connor Rivas. Known as Gramps to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was a devoted son, brother, father and grandfather and great grandfather. Ellwood was an avid golfer throughout his life; he very much loved going to the golf course and hitting a few shots with his son Kevin, even after being stricken with ALS. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 1st, 2014 at the Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA, with interment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte Court House, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bible Center Church, 1111 Oakhurst Drive, Charleston, WVA 25314. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is in charge of arrangements.
