June Trent Scruggs, our beloved mother, passed away January 8, 2015, surrounded by her family. She was eighty-five years, six months, and four days.
Born on the 4th of July 1929, in Charlotte County, Virginia to Elic Edgar Trent and Mildred Montgomery Trent. She graduated from Randolph Henry High School in 1945 and attended Phillips Business College. Married Howard E. Scruggs July 5, 1948. She was the consummate farmer’s wife and devoted mother of five children. She was a devoted member of Monte Vista Baptist Church. Known as a master gardener, she shared her bounty with friends, neighbors and even strangers who admired her beautiful flowers and vegetables. She loved children and provided childcare in her home for over fifty years. She will be remembered also for her compassionate service to friends and neighbors and anyone in need. Her greatest joy was her family. She loved deeply and taught her posterity, by example, how to work hard, appreciate your blessings, and enjoy the beautiful and simple things in life. Preceded in death by husband, Howard E. Scruggs who died in 2009, her parents, and her siblings, Helen Trent Perry, Edgar Trent, Warren Buddy Trent, and Mack Trent.
June is survived by her five children Howard Scruggs Dorinda; Anne Duffer, Billy Scruggs and Marty Scruggs fiancé Cheryl all of Hurt, Virginia and Judy Farris Ted of Draper, Utah. Her pride and joy were her twelve grandchildren Tiffany and Tara Scruggs, Amy Cox, Rachel Nichols, Justin and Ryan Scruggs, Sarah, Mary Ann, and Beth Scruggs, and Ian, Colin, and Hannah Farris and seven great-grandchildren, Lexi and Eric Nichols, Zachary Scruggs, Hayden Scruggs, Magdalena June Farris-Butterfield and Taygan and Ryder Howard Farris and her very special cat, Miss Kitty.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, January 11. 2015, in Monte Vista Baptist Church, Hurt. Interment will follow at the Cullen Baptist Church Cemetery, Cullen, Virginia. The family will receive friends at the Monte Vista Baptist Church on Saturday, January 10, 2015, from 7 to 8 p.m. All other times at the home of Howard and Dorinda Scruggs. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Grit Ruritan Club Scholarship Fund, 2288 Grit Road, Hurt, VA 24563. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA, is in charge of arrangements.
