Edward William Surko, Sr., age 94, of Keysville, VA passed away on Friday, November 22, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in New York City to the late Alexander and Helen Knauer Surko. Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Joan A. Surko; his daughter, Veronica Connelly; his granddaughter, Aliz Kennedy; his grandson, Jason Surko; and his brother, Alexander Surko.

Edward served in the United States Navy and was a member of the Underwater Demolition Team evolved to the modern Seal Teams 1947-1951. He served on the New York Fire Department from 1959-1979. Edward received the Meritorious Service Award on three different occasions (September 1961, September 1972, and July 1975). He enjoyed sailing, diving, flying, and spear fishing in his spare time.

Edward is survived by one son, Edward William Surko, Jr.; one daughter, Leslie K. Kennedy; nine grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Edward was a courageous, loyal, and self- sacrificing husband and father. He will be remembered for his many adventures acts of bravery and numerous story telling’s.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m., Friday, December 6, 2024, in Briery Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Keysville VA. The Reverend Dewey Barker will be officiating. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is in charge of arrangements.

    Leslie,

    I got to know Ed for the short time he was able to attend Briery Presbyterian in the last few years. He was always early and we would chat before the service. Wish I had known him longer he was very interesting. Sadly, I will not be able to attend on Friday as I have another important church duty at hat time and day. Blessings, Pastor Rich Henderson
