Berta Newcomb Childress

Berta Newcomb Childress, age 87, of Phenix, VA went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at home surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Violet Newcomb. Berta was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-three years, Joe G. Childress; three sisters, Joyce N. Smith, Lucy N. Bentley, and Lula Bell Newcomb.

Berta is survived by her son, Rodney J. Childress (Charlotte Toland); Eleana Toland and Bethann Nichols; two sisters, Lois N. Harris and Linda N. Lipscomb (Marvin); a brother, A. E. Newcomb, Jr. (Ida Mae); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Berta was a faithful and devoted member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. She also served on the Phenix Town Council and several town committees. Berta took pride in all of the children that she cared for in her home for over thirty-five years.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2025, in Bethel Baptist Church, Phenix, VA with interment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte Court House, VA. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Berta’s memory to Phenix Volunteer Fire Department. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is in charge of arrangements.
