Carolyn Shook Rasmussen

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carolyn Frances Shook Rasmussen, who departed this world on May 23, 2025, at the age of 77. Carolyn was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew her.

Born January 10, 1948, in Keysville, VA, the daughter of Robert Lee Shook, Sr. and Elizabeth Powell Shook.

Carolyn graduated from Randolph Henry High School, class of 1966. She began working in retail while living in Keysville. Carolyn eventually moved to Hopewell, VA where she continued to work in retail. She began woodworking with her late husband, John, who was a general contractor. Together, they made crafts as well as small pieces of furniture. They also worked hard to remodel their home in Hopewell, completing most of the work themselves. Eventually, she resigned from retail and began installing floors with John, ultimately retiring from installing floors in approximately 2010/2011.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her late husband, John Henry Rasmussen, Jr.; father, Robert L. Shook, Sr.; and nephew, Ryan Lee Shook. She is survived by her children, Annette “Dawn” Webber (Eric), Kenneth “Dwayne” or “Kenny” Garrett (Dawn), Lisa Ball (Jeffrey), Terri Rasmussen, and Sonja Jackson (Scotty); fourteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Carolyn is also survived by her mother, Elizabeth P. Shook; and siblings, Donna “Polly” Newcomb, Larry “Buddy” Shook, and Robert “Butch” Shook, Jr. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces. Carolyn loved spending time with family whenever she could. She was quite the cook and baker - she enjoyed preparing meals and making desserts for everyone. Carolyn also had a green thumb and a love for gardening. She enjoyed planting new flowers and plants and gifting some to others.

Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:30 p.m., on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville. A service of remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, May 30, 2025 at Browning-Duffer Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery.
