March 25, 1943 – October 11, 2026
Cletus Wayne Anderson, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home in Richmond, Virginia, on October 11, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. True to his lifelong passion, he spent his final moments watching his beloved Washington Redskins.
Born on March 25, 1943, in Grottoes, Virginia, Wayne was the son of the late John and Margaret Anderson. He was raised in Keysville, Virginia, alongside his four brothers. A proud alumnus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Wayne was in the Alpha Zeta Agricultural honors fraternity and graduated in 1965 with a degree in Agricultural Economics.
His career in the tobacco industry brought global adventures to his young family. Wayne and his wife, Brenda, spent five years in Managua, Nicaragua, working for the British American Tobacco Company before eventually settling in Richmond. Later, they lived in Cali, Colombia, from 1982 to 1983 while Wayne worked for Universal Leaf Tobacco. Following an early retirement, Wayne dedicated his time to his passions. He possessed an incredible green thumb that produced beautiful gardens, much to the envy of his neighbors.
An exceptional athlete and avid golfer, Wayne played basketball and baseball at Randolph Henry High, baseball at Virginia Tech, and shared many memorable golf tournaments in Nicaragua and with his brother, Glenn, in Richmond. He was a devoted sports fan who spent decades cheering on the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Washington Redskins, and his cherished Virginia Tech Hokies.
For over a decade, Wayne faced a private and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He approached his illness with immense dignity, always striving to protect those he loved from the reality of his illness.
Wayne's greatest legacy is his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Brenda Scott Anderson; his daughter, Melissa Markey and her husband, Alain; his son, Cleat Anderson; and his three cherished grandsons, Daniel, Adam, and Andrew Markey. He also leaves behind his brother, Len Anderson (Bonnie); after being preceded in death by his brothers, John Anderson, Bobby Anderson, and Glen Anderson (Anne). He also loved his many nieces and nephews in his extended family.
A funeral service celebrating Wayne's life will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, October 16, 2026 at Lebanon Church in Drakes Branch, Virginia. A graveside service will follow immediately and then a reception.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Wayne's memory to the The Parkinson's Foundation at The Parkinson's Foundation. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is in charge of arrangements.
