Coleen Grey Poindexter Andrews passed away at home surrounded by her family on March 13, 2026, just shy of 100 years old. Coleen was born on April 24, 1926 to Janie Pillow Poindexter and John Robertson Poindexter. She was the fourth of six children and grew up on her family farm in Old Well, Virginia. She attended Bethel Elementary School and Randolph-Henry High School where she was voted “Most Popular Girl” during her senior year.
Coleen was a post-World War II bride. She was married to Hugh B. “Duck” Andrews on Valentine’s Day 1947, in a double wedding. Duck passed in 2007 and she missed him every day. She lovingly raised their two children, Dexter Andrews and RoseMarie Bundy, with great devotion. She took pride in being a Poindexter and adored her family, including her parents, five siblings, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and nine nieces and nephews.
She is survived by Dexter, RoseMarie, and their families. Dexter’s family includes her granddaughters Whitney Andrews and Rachel Napier as well as Rachel’s husband Joshua and their children Spencer, Ean, Eli, and Charlotte. RoseMarie’s family includes her son, Bryce Carter and his wife Allie and their children Pierce and Henry. There was also a special “daughter” in Coleen’s life, Bonnie DeMuth, her long-time neighbor and loyal friend.
Coleen was the oldest surviving resident of Phenix, and as such, in 2024 she was selected as Grand Marshall of the Phenix Christmas Parade thanks to the coordination of Amanda Letterman, her neighbor and family friend.
Coleen was blessed with wonderful caregivers. For nearly the past four years, Donna Dickerson was with Coleen and brought love and compassion to her every day. And over the last year, Coleen also had other faithful caregivers including her devoted granddaughters Whitney and Rachel, her niece Laura Lee Cook, and also Barbara Baker, Carol Taylor, and Lisa Thompson-Traynham.
A Service of Thanksgiving for her life will be held at Phenix Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 17th at 1:00 pm with internment to follow at Rough Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to her beloved Phenix Presbyterian Church. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is in charge of arrangements.
