Dorothy Ann Dunaway, age 84, of Rustburg, VA, formerly of Keysville, VA went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. Born on July 19, 1942 to the Late Charlie E. and Jessie Newcomb Lacks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Giles Dunaway; eight, brothers, George Moody Lacks, Nelson William Lacks, Charlie Woodrow Lacks, Paul Allen Lacks, Herman Fuller Lacks, Raymond Edward Lacks Sr., Roy Hagood Lacks, and Harvey Wiley Lacks; five sisters, Mary Elizabeth Lacks Royster, Frances Catherine Lacks Harmon, Naomi Mae Lacks Jones, Lucille Raye Lacks Echols Lewis, and Irma Holcomb Lacks Watkins.
A devoted Christian, mother, and grandmother, Dorothy loved using her passion for cooking to bring happiness to everyone around her. She faithfully served Friendship Baptist Church by teaching Sunday School, leading Vacation Bible School, and overseeing meals for all church events. Dorothy also loved music; she enjoyed singing in the choir. She always had a smile and a word of encouragement for everyone she met. Dorothy was greatly loved and will be missed.
Dorothy is survived by a son, Ronnie Dunaway and his wife, Teresa; a daughter, Peggy Brown Witt and her husband, Jason; three grandchildren, Jeremy Dunaway, Wendy Tucker, and Olivia Witt Pettry and her husband, Tyler; five great-grandchildren, Chastity Dunaway Jenkins and her husband, Wade, Caleb Tucker, Camden “Fred” Tucker, Samantha Ryleigh Pettry, and Chance Gauge Dunaway; and one great-great grandchild, Sutton "Ellie Mae" Meredith Jenkins; one sister, Nancy Lee Lacks Newcomb and her husband, Wayne; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 12, 2026, at 2:30 p.m., at Friendship Baptist Church, Drakes Branch, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Dr. Jerry P. Jordan and Pastor Bobby Duffy will officiate. Special music will be provided by Paula Dunaway. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is in charge of arrangements.
