John Walter Watts, Sr., 84, died peacefully in his home with family on Saturday, November 22, 2025. He was born on March 10, 1941 in the Watts family home in Eureka, the son of O. M. “Mack” and Martha Elizabeth “Beth” (Miller) Watts.
A graduate of Randolph-Henry High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, John went on to serve in the United States Army, earn a degree in engineering, and build a successful construction company with his father and brothers. In the latter part of his life he focused all of his working efforts on farming the same land that belonged to his father and grandfather, finding deep purpose in this shared stewardship.
John loved his family, his work, and his many friends all over Charlotte County. He found special meaning in every chance encounter with friends or those he was meeting for the first time. He appreciated the natural beauty of God’s creation and communed with Him regularly while working long hours alone in his fields.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and infant sister Martha. He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Gerry (Sue), Betty, Alice, Lois, Judy (Kenny), and Larry (Patricia); children: Walter (Margaret), Laurel (James), Wilson (Kara), Greer (Clay), and Ainsley (Dustin); grandchildren: John, Adam, Ben, Sadie, Jackson, Addie, Mason, Mia, Ethan, Aidan, Charlie, Caroline, and Corbin; and many special nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held at Browning-Duffer Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 25th from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM, and a service of remembrance will be held at Eureka Baptist Church on Wednesday, November 26th at 10:00 AM with a graveside ceremony to follow.
