Michael Edwin Troy

January 14, 1962 – March 14, 2026

It is with profound sadness and deep love that the family of Michael Edwin Troy — known to all who loved him as “Mike” — announces his passing on March 14, 2026, after a courageous and long-fought battle with colon cancer. Mike was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and servant to his community whose life was defined by his unwavering dedication to others. He was 64 years old.

Early Life

Mike was born on January 14, 1962, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, to James and Patricia Troy. He grew up alongside his three brothers, Rex, Steve, and Jimmy. He went on to graduate from John Marshall High School in Moundsville, West Virginia, in 1980 — the same year he enlisted in the United State Air Force, where he served in the first tactical fighter wing, Langley Air Force Base Virginia until 1983.

Career

After his military service, Mike began a distinguished career with Dominion Energy in 1984, where he would serve the company for 34 years before retiring in 2018. In 1994, his work brought him and his family to Keysville, Virginia — a community that would become his true home and the place where he would leave his most lasting mark. Following his retirement from Dominion Energy, Mike continued to contribute his deep expertise as a Technical Consultant with the company beginning in 2019, a role he held until the time of his passing.

A Life in Service: Emergency Medical Services

Perhaps no aspect of Mike’s life more fully captured the depth of his character than his more than 40 years of volunteer and professional service in Virginia’s emergency medical services community. From the earliest days of his time in Hampton, VA, Mike gave his time, energy, and expertise without reservation to those facing their most vulnerable moments.

Mike was a proud and dedicated member of the Charlotte County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Meherrin Volunteer Fire & Rescue, and the Keysville Volunteer Fire Department, which he joined in 2024 and served until his passing. These organizations were not merely affiliations — they were extensions of who he was and how he chose to spend his life.

Professionally, Mike reached the highest level of paramedic certification available, earning his Critical Care Paramedic credentials and serving in that capacity with Centra Paramedicine Services beginning in 2022. He also served for many years as a paramedic with Centra Health, where his skill and compassion made a profound impact on those in his care. Beyond his own practice, Mike gave back to the field he loved by instructing and mentoring EMTs and paramedics, helping shape the next generation of emergency medical professionals. His influence on emergency medicine in his community will be felt for generations to come.

Family

Above all else, Mike was a family man. On July 22, 2005, he married the love of his life, Amy Troy, and the two built a life together rooted in love, faith, and service. Amy was his steadfast partner and the heart of their home.

Mike is survived by his three children - his son Andrew Troy and his fiancée Taylor, his daughter Megan Stanley and her husband Aaron, and his son Timothy Beard and his wife Autumn. His greatest joys in his final years were his four beautiful granddaughters — Clare Troy, Anne Troy, Emilia Troy, and Nora Stanley — whom he loved so very dearly and who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Mike is also survived by his parents, James and Patricia Troy; his three brothers, Rex Troy, Steve Troy and his wife Christy, and Jimmy Troy and his wife Tonya; his mother-in-law, Diane Jackson; his brothers-in-law, Scotty Jackson and his wife Sonja, Jason Jackson and his wife Alanna, and Chris Jackson and his wife Bethanne; his sister-in-law, Ashley Jackson; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews. He is further surrounded in memory by a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and fellow first responders who were privileged to know him.

Mike’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Centra Southside Community Hospital Emergency Department, Centra Oncology & Centra Hospice for their excellent care and compassion during his illness.

Mike Troy lived a life of quiet and extraordinary service — to his country, his community, his profession, and his family. He was the kind of man who showed up: to answer an emergency call in the middle of the night, to mentor a young paramedic just starting out, and to simply be present for the people he loved. His passing leaves a profound void, but the legacy he leaves behind is one of remarkable generosity, compassion, and courage. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
