William Henry (“Pete”) Hopkins 1947–2026 Drakes Branch, Virginia

The Currie family is mourning the passing of their beloved brother and uncle, William Henry “Pete” Hopkins, who died on Sunday, September 13, 2026 in Blackstone, VA following a brief illness.

Born in Worcester, MA on August 22,1947, Pete spent most of his younger years in Union County, NJ. In 1978, Pete, along with his parents and siblings moved to Drakes Branch, VA beginning a new chapter in the community that would become home. During his working years, Pete was a dedicated employee at Ponton’s Wood Products, and later at Stanley Lumber.

Pete had a particular affection for classic TV programs, old movies and vintage video games. He enjoyed playing old pinball machines and would spend countless hours honing his skills. He loved going to parades and admired the antique cars, anxiously awaiting the opportunity to sit behind the wheel while someone took his picture. For sure, Pete had an insatiable appetite and would always be the first at the table with his trusty cup of hot tea (cream no sugar).

Pete possessed an uncanny memory for dates, places and events. He could recall birthdays, anniversaries and family occasions from years—even decades—earlier, often remembering details that others had long forgotten. In his own quiet way, Pete became something of a keeper of the family calendar and its memories.

Those who knew him will recall his affection for family, his pet cats, his gentle nature, and his remarkable ability to hold onto the past. He found joy in things that others might overlook, and his enthusiasm for them was part of what made him special. He will be deeply missed by his family and by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Pete was predeceased by his parents, Ashton Markoe Currie & Evelyn (Gautreau) Currie of Drakes Branch, VA. He is survived by his siblings, Margaret Young of Crewe, VA, Arthur Currie of Powhatan, VA, Robert Currie (Suzanne) of Summit, NJ, David Currie (Ann) of Chesterfield, VA and numerous nieces & nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Monday, September 21, 2026 in Lebanon Church Cemetery. The Reverend Norman Ramsey will be officiating. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is in charge of arrangements.
