Betty Jean McKinney, 77, passed away October 26, 2020, in Richmond, Virginia, because of complications with COVID-19. Betty was born September 9, 1943, in Lunenburg County, Virginia, to Thea Ardis Newcomb and Lockie Townsend Newcomb. She later married Carl Ray McKinney for 48 years and cared for daughter Janice Daniel and son Michael Ray McKinney.

She is remembered in both life and passing as a loving wife, “the best mother ever” by her children, a doting grandmother to her grandchildren and a faithful friend to all. Her greeting smile, accompanied by a warm hug and loving energy will not be forgotten. To those she met, Betty left an imprint with her caring and loving nature. To family, she was both guidance and a leading spirit. At 77, Betty’s family believes they had more time to share a love with one another. “She was my comfort compass and never, ever let me down,” Michael said. “Always my cheerleader and friend in addition to my mother. You will always be in my heart and mind forever.”

Betty is survived by daughter Janice and son-in-law Terry Daniel; son Michael and daughter-in-law Mindy McKinney; sisters Linda Newcomb and Brenda Lewis; grandchildren Christopher Corp, Kerry Daly, Karley McKinney, Kelsey Brooks and Kacey McKinney; and her 14 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Ray; her parents Thea and Lockie; and her brother James Newcomb.

Betty worked for the Charlotte County School System for 39 years and was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church in Drakes Branch, Virginia. She was a dedicated cook and shared a love for gardening.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Drakes Branch, VA. Due to COVID—19 please wear mask and social distance. In lieu of flowers, her family is requesting donations to Charlotte County Rescue Squad. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is serving the family.
