Doris Ray Beaver Thompson, 81, of Fort Mitchell, VA, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was the daughter of the late Varner and Louise Beaver of Drakes Branch.
Doris is survived by her husband of sixty-two years, William; daughter, Leigh; sons, Chad and Richard and his wife Amy; and three grandchildren, Carter, Sarah, and Owen.
Doris loved taking care of her husband, children, grandchildren, flowers, and her animals. She loved working in her church and was an adult Sunday School teacher at Plantersville United Methodist Church. After raising her children, she went back to work at the Lunenburg County Courthouse, first in the clerk’s office and later as a secretary to the Honorable Judge William Wellons. She worked to establish the Friends of the Fort Mitchell and Keysville Depots in order to restore and preserve the historic building sites. Mom never met a stranger and loved to laugh and have fun. Her favorite musician was Elvis and even through the later stages of her disease she still found joy and comfort listening to his music.
A visitation will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Plantersville United Methodist Church, 1281 Thompson Road, Drakes Branch, VA. with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m., and interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association.

William, Leigh, Richard, and Chad, I am so sorry about Doris Ray. I wish she hadn’t had to leave us, but I know she is in the arms of Jesus. She enjoyed life, laughter, and having fun. I loved her. We had some fun times together with Nancy. I pray she and Nancy are together again!

Our sympathy goes out to the Thompson family. Doris and I had great times at Lunenburg County Courthouse. We laughed all the time, because she was such a joker and I wasn’t much help toning it down. There are stories that I could talk about for days we shared together. There was the time when Doris was supposed to print a 12 month calendar for the new year. Doris does a whole year print out 365 days. The printer would not stop printing and the Honorable Judge Wellon comes in to work that day. I came in the door she was about to fall out of her chair laughing. I looked under her desk, it was a pile of papers. We laughed until tears were rolling down our face. Doris said I thought the Judge wasn’t going to leave. So I was guilty to trashing all that paper. I love Doris, she will always be one of my special friend I first met when I started working at the Lunenburg Courthouse Complex. Doris rest in peace. Forever Be Remembered, Sardis

It’s been a very long time since I lived in Keysville. But I can say without a doubt meeting Doris Ray while her mother Louise was in Britthaven has been a treasure in my memories of Keysville. I am so sorry to learn of her battle and passing. We often spent hours talking when she would come in to visit her mother. She could always brighten the gloomiest of days. I will remember her fondly, and smile when I think of her.

So sorry to hear this, family. I will always remember her infectious laughter and our chats years ago about music. She made everything brighter and will be missed!
