Bernice Sterling Smith Harris age 96 , beloved wife of the late Ray Moore Harris, passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, in Roxboro, NC.
Mrs. Harris was born in Charlotte County, VA on June 24, 1914, a daughter of Isaac Watts Smith and Mattie Thomas Smith. She was a graduate of Phenix High School, Phenix, VA before Randolph-Henry High School was opened. She lived most of her adult life in Keysville, VA and worked as a sewing-machine operator at Virginia Crafts in Keysville. She was a member of Ash Camp Baptist Church in Keysville. In January 2008 she moved to Cambridge Hills Assisted Living in Roxboro, NC.
Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her eight brothers and sisters and their spouses.
She is survived by her four children, Melvin Harris and his wife Mary of Springfield, VA; Gary Harris and his wife Carolyn of Rustburg, VA; Sandra Harris Sharpe and her husband Tom of Fountain Inn, SC; and Bonnie Harris Betterton and her husband John of Roxboro, NC. She is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at Ash Camp Baptist Church, Keysville, VA, with interment in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Ash Camp Baptist Church.
