David Comfort Watkins, Sr.
Called home to glory on August 10, 2010, the family of David Comfort Watkins, Sr. rejoices that he is in the arms of our Lord.
Born on April 21st, 1917 in Washington, DC, David was the son of Joel Hill and Isabel Rutherfoord Watkins. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 62 years, Margaret Smith Watkins; his children, Margaret Donnell Watkins, David Comfort Watkins, Jr. and wife Pam, Elizabeth Watkins Carson and husband Carter, and James Clement Watkins and wife Allyson; his grandchildren, Allison Watkins Pillow, Emily Watkins Hamlett, David Comfort Watkins, III, Carrington Leigh Watkins, Scott Carter Carson, Isabel Wysor Carson, Mary Margaret Watkins, and Robert Wease Watkins; and one great-granddaughter, Sidney Clifton Hamlett.
David graduated from Charlotte High School and Georgia Tech. He was a Captain in the Army during World War II, serving twenty eight months in the European Theater, flying aerial reconnaissance missions over Italy . He was a founder of Virginia Crafts, Inc. and Heidi-Ho, Inc, both in Keysville, VA. He was a councilman and Mayor of the Town of Charlotte Court House. He was Director of the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation, President of the Charlotte County Ruritan Club, and served on the boards of Virginia Episcopal School, the Hampden-Sydney Music Festival, and the Charlotte County Branch of the APVA. David was a life-long and faithful member and Elder of Village Presbyterian Church in Charlotte Court House. Among the loves of his earthly life were church, family, tennis, gardening, books, and music.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, at Village Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to a charity of your choice. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is in charge of arrangements.
