CURRIE, Evelyn M., 88 of Drakes Branch, VA passed away peacefully on July 15, 2015 in Crewe, VA. Mrs. Currie was born on November 21, 1926 in Holden, MA to Henry and Catherine Gautreau. After leaving MA, she moved to New Jersey with her young son. She married Ashton Markoe Currie in 1953 and lived on a small farm in Scotch Plains, NJ.
The couple quickly grew a family, first with a daughter followed by three sons. The family had the unique experience of enjoying many aspects of farm life while living in suburban New Jersey, within 30 miles of New York City. For many years, family vacations were spent either on the Jersey shore or camping in the North Woods of Ontario, Canada.
In 1978, Mr. and Mrs. Currie moved to Drakes Branch, VA after he retired from his job with the Scotch Plains Board of Education. During their time in Charlotte County, Mrs. Currie worked in the Drakes Branch office of Dr. Charles Davis. Mr. Currie volunteered with the local volunteer rescue squad. Ashton Currie passed away on September 26, 1984.
In her later years, her greatest joy was watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and prosper. Her family is grateful for the care and support provided her from the local Meals on Wheels and her Centra Hospice caregivers.
Evelyn Currie is survived by her daughter, Margaret Young of Crewe, VA; four sons, William Hopkins of Drakes Branch, VA, Arthur Currie of Glen Allen, VA, Robert and his wife Suzanne Currie of Summit, NJ, and David and his wife Ann Currie of Chesterfield, VA. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Tommy Pun of Celebration, FL, Hilary Boller of Brooklyn, NY, Claire Currie of Hoboken, NJ, Melanie Young of Crewe, VA, Patrick Currie of South Boston, VA, Sara Currie of Richmond, VA and Brittney Currie of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren.
